September marks the beginning of The Season of Scares, and this year’s first autumnal theme is Lost Places.
I’ve always been drawn to places that feel as though they’ve slipped slightly out of the present; old roads, forgotten buildings, ruined castles, villages tucked away beyond the beaten path. All of the places that are layered with history and everything that came afterwards.
Sometimes those layers are what make a place unsettling, and sometimes they’re what make it beautiful.
This month, I’ll be exploring some of those places through a series of Journal entries following a recent European road trip. The Long Road Home from Dracula took me through landscapes rich with history, folklore and stories.
The journey is over now. However, journeys like these don’t really end when we arrive home. The road remains in memory, places linger, and occasionally, when we look back, we discover that the things we thought we’d left behind have followed us home.
